The penalization of local government councils during former president Abdulla Yameen’s tenure will be withdrawn and amended, says Home Minister Imran Abdulla.
Minister Imran said in a tweet on Monday night that the government is reviewing cases of the previous government taking action against members of atoll and island councils.
Minister Imran said that any such action will be reversed and that his administration would refrain from 'penalizing councils over political matters'.
A number of island and atoll councils, and their members, were suspended by the previous government for voicing concern over policy.
The current government has pledged to decentralize power in the Maldives and give councils authority over their jurisdictions.
