Kihaadhoo island in Baa atoll has been experiencing recurrent blackouts for over a year now, and a solution is yet to be reached, revealed the island’s council Vice President Mohamed Shareef.
Shareef revealed that the island’s engine house currently has a 90-kilowatt generator that generates 30 kilowatts of electricity to the entire island. The bigger generator of 128 kilowatts has been wrecked for some time and issues have been surfacing in both generators for over a year now.
Highlighting that the island has been experiencing recurrent power cuts for over two weeks, Shareef stressed that every household has since been limiting their electricity usage to one fan and one light.
In this regard, Shareef noted that the business community of the island has been facing several losses due to damage to their expensive goods following the blackouts and the island needs a permanent fix, soon.
Stressing that the previous administration of Abdulla Yameen had not given much priority to islands with a smaller population, Shareef noted that the residents hope for a quick fix from the current government.
RaajjeMV understands that state utilities company FENAKA Corporation is currently working to provide a permanent fix to the electricity issues in Kihaadhoo.
FENAKA’s Supervisor Mohamed Zuhuree stated that they are expecting to receive some spare parts and injectors to fix the island’s generators, some time today following which work will start immediately.
