Parliament on Tuesday rejected the bill proposed to amend the political parties act.
The bill proposed that the party's leaders take on the responsibility of any debt the party incurs during their leadership.
The bill further proposed to give relevant state institutions the power to deduct from the allowance given to political parties, in order to pay off the party's debt.
The bil was submitted by Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)'s Deputy Leader and MP for Kudahuvadhoo constituency, Ahmed Amir.
It was rejected with 37 pro-government members voting against it, and 17 members voting in favor.
