PPM submits motion to block addition of new parliament seats

The first deliberation on the motion was heard at Monday's sitting

Motion was submitted by PPM PG member Dr. Abdulla Khaleel

Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) has submitted a motion to Parliament that stops the addition of more seats to Parliament.

The motion was submitted by Member of Parliament for Nilandhoo constituency, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel and a deliberation on it was held at the Parliament sitting on Monday.

The motion submitted by MP Khaleel notes that the number of seats in Parliament has been 85 since 28th May 2014.

This comes at a time the Elections Commission (EC) announced that they will be adding two more constituencies to Parliament. The additional seats will be for mid-Mahchangoalhi constituency and west Henveiru constituency.

Khaleel states that the motion was submitted as he believes adding seats to Parliament once in every few years will bring negative impacts to the country’s economy. He added that an increase in parliament members will get in the way of development as well as hinder basic services to citizens.
