Supreme Court nullifies prison conviction of Sheikh Imran
The prison conviction was nullified on Thursday
Supreme Court issued order to suspend Imran’s sentence on 1 November
Imran was sentenced in February 2016

Supreme Court has on Thursday nullified the 12-year prison conviction against current Home Minister and Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla under terror charges.

Imran was sentenced in 2015 on terror charges, alleging that a speech he gave at the mass May Day rally in 2015 provoked violence and unrest.

Supreme Court’s nullification of the leader’s prison conviction comes while speculations have risen over his appointment to the Cabinet of Ministers, while he was a convict.

Imran’s conviction was upheld by the High Court in 2016 and the Supreme Court rejected his appeal the first time he filed it. However, Supreme Court had on the 01st of November, issued an order to suspend his prison sentence following Imran’s second request to review his conviction.

The hearings in the Supreme Court case had concluded on Monday.

Imran had taken oath of office as Minister of Home Affairs on the 17th of November, President Solih’s inaugural date.
