Newly sworn in President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has welled up as he spoke of one of his highest prioritized pledges, re-opening investigations into the disappearances and unsolved murders of individuals.
Taking the podium to address the nation for the first time after having been sworn-in as Maldives seventh President, Solih including this pledge among everything that will be carried out within the first 100 days of his tenure.
“Justice needs to be served for those who were victim to torture. The millions embezzled from state funds need to be returned to the people. The truth behind the unsolved murders and disappearances of individuals needs to be brought into the spotlight. These things must be done for us to go forth as one” said President Solih.
President Solih was seen going through his speech with a lot of struggle, and he was seen welling up at one point following which the cameras focused on him had averted their direction from him, to the crowd. While President Solih was speaking of his highly prioritized pledge to re-open investigations into said cases, the camera was focused to the family of abducted journalist Ahmed Rilwan’s family sitting in the crowd.
While Solih has included this among the things he will be accomplishing within the first 100 days of his tenure, it was one of the biggest pledges he made to the citizens during his campaign. He further assured that he would carry out this pledge on the very first day of his administration.
With this having been said, it has been months since the cases of slain blogger Yameen Rasheed, Member of Parliament for Ungoofaaru constituency Afrasheem Ali and abducted Journalist Rilwan among multiple others slain in their prime, have been left uninvestigated. Perpetrators of these murders are yet to be brought in front of justice.
