Japan has congratulated Ibrahim Mohamed Solih following his win in the September 23 presidential election.
In a press statement, the Japanese government expressed hope of working with the new government.
The Japanese government stated that it wishes to increase diplomatic ties between the two countries and work together to solve regional issues.
Japan also expressed hope of a peaceful transition of power in Maldives.
The Elections Commission (EC) has confirmed that Solih won with 58.4 percent of the votes against President Abdulla Yameen, who received 41.6 percent.
