Opposition Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his running mate Faisal Naseem have returned to capital city Male’ after concluding a successful final campaign trip across Addu and Fuvahmulah cities, on Friday.
While the pair’s final campaign trip began on Wednesday, they had started from Fuvahmulah city and ended with Addu, having hosted a gathering on Thursday night. Solih, Naseem and team departed from Addu’s International Airport on Friday morning.
While several senior figures from the joint opposition parties had accompanies Solih on this campaign trip, former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim, wife of jailed strongman Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had arrived in Addu city on Thursday evening to join the opposition coalition’s campaign gathering, has also returned back to Male’ alongside Solih.
The Elections Commission is to place a total of 32 ballot boxes in Addu city which comprises of 15,966 eligible voters and 10 ballot boxes in Fuvahmulah city which comprises of 5,726 eligible voters. Both Addu and Fuvahmulah cities comprise of a majority of joint opposition coalition supporters. Solih and Naseem’s final arrival to the island before the Presidential Election slated for Sunday was received with a warm welcome.
It is notable that Solih had begun his first trip as part of his campaign for the approaching election, from Addu city in early July, on Friday, he had officially ended his campaign from Addu as well. While the opposition coalition’s nation-wide campaign tour ended on Tuesday, they had visited every inhabited island across outlying atolls within the span of three months.
