Joint Opposition coalition’s presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to compose an audit of the prison facility in Maafushi Prison within the first 100 days of his administration.
Solih made this pledge while speaking to attendees at the Q&A session hosted by privately run television channel RaajjeTV on Tuesday night at Hotel Jen. Stressing that several people raised their concerns regarding the condition in which Maafushi Prison is currently in, Solih said that a thorough audit will be compiled during his tenure.
The opposition candidate further stated that additional employees are needed at the prison facility to improve its current condition.Solih said that unexplained deaths have occurred in the prison over the past few months and that ab
out 20 deaths have occurred within the five-year term of President Abdulla Yameen, which is almost at an end.
Highlighting that he himself believes that jails are not exactly a fitting to be placed in, Solih stated that it will be made more fitting by providing basic necessities such as mattresses to prison facilities.
Although several reform efforts were put into making prison facilities better during self-exiled former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration, Solih pointed out that the current administration had failed to put in any efforts to improve the conditions of prisons in the country.
