Velana International Airport opened its new runway on Tuesday evening.

The opening of the main airport’s new runway was marked by the landing of an A380, the world’s largest passenger airliner.

This is the first time such a plane landed in Maldives.

The A380, which was piloted by Maldivian Ali Ahsan, was carrying the Maldives team that won the SAFF Suzuki Cup in Dhaka.

The new runway, which measures 3,400 meters in length and 60 meters in width, was developed by Beijing Urban Construction Group with a USD 500 million loan from China’s Exim Bank.
