Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has requested authorities for a venue at Artificial Beach to hold events on six different days before the presidential elections.
A letter addressed to the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure reads that the Elections Commission had on the 28th of July accepted Joint Opposition coalition’s Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s candidacy for the approaching Presidential Election slated for the 23rd of September.
As such, the authorities and the Elections Commission alike, had given their assurance that each candidate vying for Presidency in the September poll will be given equal opportunity to campaign, and so, the MDP requested the authorities to allow them to hold campaign events at Artificial Beach on six different days, from the 13th to the 15th and from the 20th to the 22nd of September, from 06:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
After three years, the Joint Opposition coalition was allowed to hold a gathering on the 08th of September, for which thousands poured into the carnival area. Prominent figures and former Ministers had joined the Saturday gathering, deemed to be the biggest one of its kind in the country’s history.
