Opposition vice-presidential candidate Faisal Naseem has been left in tears are being received at his native island with a gracious welcome.
Naseem arrived in Fuvahmulah on Monday, not long after the ruling party’s vice-presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed arrived in the atoll for campaigning.
While residents of all ages had arrived at the airport with garlands, numerous residents from eight districts of Fuvahmulah atoll gathered in the island to welcome the opposition running mate, and the whole area echoed with applause for him upon his arrival.
This is Naseem’s second trip to Fuvahmulah since he was elected as opposition President hopeful Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s running mate, his first being alongside Solih in mid-July.
The opposition running mate had arrived at the campaign site in Dhoondigan, an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, along with approximately 300 of the supporters who had gathered at the airport to welcome him.
Naseem spent about 45 minutes meeting and greeting island residents upon his arrival.
If the opposition coalition wins the approaching Presidential election slated for 23rd September, Naseem will be the second Vice President to have represented Fuvahmulah, the first being President Abdulla Yameen’s first Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.
The opposition coalition has stated that the support for President Yameen has significantly plummeted in Fuvahmulah, and no other politician in recent history has received as huge a welcome in the island as Naseem had.
Upon Naseem’s arrival, the campaign site was crammed with residents who desired to greet him, and it is notable that along entire way from the airport to the campaign site, applause from supporters had not faded out.
The opposition vice-presidential candidate welled up upon seeing supporters and family members who had arrived to welcome him and showering him with words of encouragement.
According to the enthusiastic crowd, the opposition coalition will defeat President Yameen by a large margin in the September election, asserting their assurance that the next administration will be of Solih and Naseem’s. Residents added that Solih, as his name states, is a person of good virtue.
