Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the attack on the party Deputy Chairperson and former MP for Ihavandhoo constituency Ahmed Abdulla’s property, the seizure of his staff and the threats he received by a group of individuals, reported on Friday night.

Abdulla’s office was broken into on Friday evening and a group of armed men had tied up the employee present at the time. The men had robbed MVR 36,500 from the office and taken two laptop computers after having inflicted damaged to the office property and threatening the captured employee to “wipe out” Abdulla.

According to the party, an investigative team of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) had taken a report in the case and gathered all the forensic evidence needed from the scene of the crime.

Having condemned the attack, MDP stated that they do not believe with was a normal robbery, but an act of intimidation targeted towards opposition frontrunners as the Presidential Election is upon us. The main opposition party said that this was a thoroughly planned criminal offense that must be investigated as quickly as possible.

MDP called on relevant institutions and MPS to conduct a transparent investigation into the matter and   bring the perpetrators behind this heinous act of intimidation, before justice.

The opposition party further appealed to bring an end to the several harassments faced by members of the party and members, leaders and frontrunners of the Joint Opposition parties alike with the approaching of the September election.
