Elections Commission (EC) has on Wednesday, refuted rumors circulating on social media that members of the commission are planning to hand in their resignations.

A tweet circulating on social media reads that five members of the commission are supposedly resigning, further stating that this is being done to delay the Presidential Election slated for 23rd September.

Following these speculations, EC member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram refuted these claims, saying that none of the commission members have plans to resign and that the EC does not have any plans to delay the September ballots.

“We will not carry out acts that will delay the election. We will carry out the responsibilities entitled to us under the law” Akram told RaajjeMV.

While rumors are circulating that the commission is planning to delay the election, the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives said that they want to hold the election on the 23rd of September as planned, but that they are willing to accept a delay under exceptional circumstances.

Ruling party Vice President Abdul Raheem Abdulla speaking to press refuted the opposition's claims that the government and the EC is trying to avoid holding the election.
