President Abdulla Yameen has on Wednesday appointed Ali Nashaath as a member of the Elections Commission.

His letter of appointment was presented at a ceremony held at the President's Office on Wednesday morning.

Prior to that, he took the oath of office, which was administered by High Court judge Shujau Usman.

President's Office, on July 14 opened up applications for membership at the Elections Commission, which had a vacant seat since the resignation of Mohamed Shakeel in early May. Out of those who had applied, President Yameen had sent Nashaath's name for approval.

Parliament approved his appointment at Tuesday's sitting, with 32 MPs- all representing the ruling coalition as opposition parties continue to boycott sittings calling them unlawful- voting in favor.

Nashaath also serves at the Commission's Director of Information and Communication Technology.

Following Shakeel's resignation in May, he was immediately appointed as a state minister at the economic ministry.
