President Abdulla Yameen has claimed that Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim is someone who influenced high courts of the Maldives.

He said this speaking to Haa Dhaal Hanimaadhoo citizens throughout his trip to Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal atolls, adding that the JP leader is someone who is well-practiced when it comes to courts of the Maldives going on to say that he is expert in manipulating court rulings.

He took the initial Supreme Court ruling issued on the 01st of February releasing high-profile politicians and reinstating opposition Members of Parliament as an example, stressing on Qasim’s comments on the ruling.

President Yameen further refuted claims that he had in any manner attempted to repress opportunities for the opposition to compete for Presidency in the upcoming election, highlighting that the current political detainees have been incarcerated justly and is doing time for their offences.

Moreover, President Yameen said that Qasim had voted in favor of passing the bill amending the qualifications to run for presidency that stated that persons above 65 will not be qualified to be elected as President.

The President claimed that Qasim himself believed that the prison conviction imposed on him is valid. To prove his point President Yameen highlighted that Qasim had fled his conviction and is now living abroad.

 The President is aiming verbal attacks towards opposition political leaders in his speeches during his visits to islands of Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal which is currently ongoing.
