Prominent Lawyer Abdulla Haseen has on Sunday, submitted an application to the Elections Commission, to form a new political party.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, the lawyer said that he filed the application on Sunday.

Haseen, who left the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) a week ago, said that his decision was not due to any issues with the party.

The lawyer who was known for leading opposition MDP activities, said that the new political party will not be for or against any of the current political parties, adding that the motive behind creating a new political party is to ensure laborers' rights and to work towards maintaining social justice.

Haseen said that he will reveal further details once the Elections Commission's approval comes through.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that a proposal to form a new political party was submitted on Sunday, and that a response will be given within the coming week after looking into legal procedures that follow.

This is the third application to be submitted to the Commission this year, with two other applications being in April. However, the EC has rejected the applications due to failure of meeting the requirements.
