LGA being used as 'a weapon' by Yameen's tyrannical government: MP Fayyaz
He made the accusation in a tweet sent out on Monday
He said that the government's actions have violated the Decentralization Act
Fayyaz's comments comes after LGA revealed that it was investigating island council members involved with MDP's primary elections

The Local Government Authority (LGA) is being used as "a weapon" by President Abdulla Yameen's tyrannical government, says Gan constituency MP Fayyaz Ismail.

He made the accusation in a tweet sent out on Monday, over the authority's decision to investigate the councilors that were involved in holding the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s primary election.

Noting that the country's decentralization system has been ruined by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Fayyaz said that the government's actions have violated the Decentralization Act.

The lawmaker added that LGA's board members and senior staff must take it upon themselves to ensure that the councilors are compensated, as well as the damages to the island due to any actions on councilors.

Fayyaz's comments comes after LGA revealed that it was investigating island council members involved with MDP's primary elections. It has specifically decided to investigate the case of two councilors of Alif Alif Ukulhas Council, after it was announced that MDP will be holding its national congress meeting in Ukulhas.

Noting that they were unable to secure a venue to hold the national congress in capital Malé City, MDP last week announced that the meeting will be held in Ukulhas, on 29-30 June.

LGA has previously suspended a number of opposition councilors, for reasons such as meeting with foreign representatives to allegedly obstructing the work of home ministry employees.
