The People's Majlis on Monday accepted a bill proposing amendments to the Education Act, aimed at facilitating home-based learning opportunities for children with disabilities and students facing mental health challenges.
The first reading of this government-sponsored bill, introduced by Huraa constituency MP Dr. Anara Naeem, took place on the 26th of last month. During Monday's sitting, the Parliament voted to accept the bill for further consideration.
According to the proposed amendment, a home-schooling program is set to be introduced based on special assessments of a student's physical or mental condition. The bill also details the specific requirements and regulations necessary to conduct education under such programs.
Government members debating the bill in Parliament stated that the legislation is essential for ensuring and protecting students' rights. They further highlighted it as a significant step in the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen the education system.
Furthermore, government members expressed their disapproval, noting that the opposition is creating a negative perception regarding the bill. The members also urged against spreading misinformation when debating such critical matters that directly impact the public.
In addition to home schooling, the bill clearly outlines and details the roles of parents, teachers, and principals in the administration and implementation of the formal school system. A primary objective of the bill is also to address and resolve the challenges encountered in the enforcement of the existing law.
