Maldives Awqaf Investment Limited is a state-owned enterprise established to align with government policies in developing and maintaining waqf properties across the country to fund religious initiatives. The company is mandated to oversee the construction of mosques, facilitate the development of necessary facilities and resources for them, and engage in sustainable, Shariah-compliant business activities to support these objectives.
This company was established by a presidential decree issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on September 12, 2026 under the powers vested in him by the Companies Act.
While President Muizzu continues to establish new state-owned enterprises, the public is raising concerns over the dissolution of existing companies under the guise of cost-cutting, which has led to what many describe as the unfair dismissal of numerous employees.
