PG to participate in 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

The Prosecutor General's Office has announced that Prosecutor General Justice (Ret.) Abbas Shareef will represent the Maldives at the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

The Prosecutor General's Office has announced that the congress will be held from September 26 to October 1, 2026, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in the United Arab Emirates. In addition to the Prosecutor General, Assistant Prosecutor General Uz. Hussain Shamee is also participating in the congress.

The theme for this year's Crime Congress is "Accelerating Crime Prevention, Criminal Justice and the Rule of Law – Protecting the People and the Planet, and Achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Digital Age."

At this year's congress, member nations will engage in extensive discussions and exchange views on the contemporary challenges of crime prevention. The agenda focuses on the evolving nature of criminal activities in a changing world, enhancing access to justice, and the responsible implementation of modern technology in the fight against crime.

The Prosecutor General is scheduled to deliver keynote addresses during three main sessions of this year’s Crime Congress. These sessions include:

2. Ancillary Meeting of the South East Asia Justice Network (SEAJust) – 27 September 2026

3. Workshop: "Ensuring Equal Justice for All: Towards Safe and Secure Societies While Respecting the Rule of Law" – 28 September 2026

In his remarks, the Prosecutor General will highlight the Maldives' achievements and challenges in combating crime, emphasizing the vital role of modern technology in law enforcement. He will also outline the Prosecutor General’s Office's ongoing efforts to streamline access to justice. According to the PG Office, the Prosecutor General will introduce delegates to "e-Dhoroshi," a virtual portal designed to provide all office services online, as well as "PGO 2.0," the office's comprehensive digital transformation project.

The United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is an international forum held among member states every five years.
