Efforts are underway to recover over MVR 10 million issued to deceased individuals, with some progress expected: Shiruna

The CEO of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), Aminath Shiruna, has stated that efforts are underway to recover over 10 million Rufiyaa in state funds issued to deceased individuals, noting that a portion of the amount is expected to be reclaimed.

In an interview with a local news outlet, Shiruna stated that efforts are underway to recover funds issued to deceased individuals by sending formal notices to local councils. She expressed confidence that a certain portion of these funds would be successfully reclaimed.

However, Shiruna did not disclose the estimated total amount expected to be recovered, nor did she specify the exact amount successfully retrieved to date.

Furthermore, Shiruna stated that efforts are underway to ensure that assistance from the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) is being directed to those most in need.

The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) stated that payments were issued to deceased individuals after monitoring ceased following the dissolution of a relevant department within the agency in 2020. Consequently, funds were erroneously disbursed to more than 700 deceased persons.

With approximately 15,000 individuals registered under the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), the agency provides financial assistance to those living in vulnerable conditions. This includes support for single parents raising children in poverty, financial aid for persons with disabilities, and assistance for guardians caring for children without parental support.
