Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called on the public to remain steadfast in upholding the principles of Islam, as demonstrated by their ancestors. He emphasized that the holy faith remains the fundamental pillar of Maldivian national identity, despite the various challenges the country has faced throughout its history.
In a video message shared on X to mark the occasion of the Day the Maldives Embraced Islam, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom stated that the Maldivian nation is built upon the foundations of Islam and that the country cannot prosper by abandoning its faith. He urged all citizens—young and old, men and women alike—to remain steadfast on the true path of Islam in the future. Furthermore, he expressed his full confidence that the Maldivian people will continue to maintain the same unwavering commitment to their faith as they have in the past.

In his remarks, President Maumoon expressed his hope that the Maldives would remain a nation loyal and devoted to Islam, just as it has for the past 900 years, and urged all Maldivian citizens to remain steadfast in their commitment to the noble guidance of the faith.
Highlighting the historical significance of this day, President Maumoon noted that the Maldives embraced Islam on the 2nd of Rabi' al-Akhir in the Hijri year 548. As today marks the 2nd of Rabi' al-Akhir 1448, he stated that exactly 900 years have passed since the nation's conversion, describing it as a momentous and historic occasion.
