Ice production at the B. Thulhaadhoo ice plant has come to a standstill after the facility ran out of fuel, leaving fishermen and fish processors unable to source ice.
Regarding the matter, Abdul Majeed, the official in charge of the Thulhaadhoo ice plant, told RaajjeMV that the facility ran out of fuel on Thursday. He added that they have received information that fuel supplies are expected to arrive on Saturday.
Noting that fuel supplies run out periodically, he stated that the ice produced previously had been managed to last until Thursday.
As Thulhaadhoo is a prominent fishing community, these challenges have significantly impacted local fishermen as well as those operating across the entire atoll. With the concerns of the fishing community mounting daily, many fishermen claim that the current administration has failed to take adequate measures to provide a permanent solution to their grievances.
Issues regarding fuel shortages at ice plants, leading to operational shutdowns, have been surfacing periodically. Most recently, in 2025, the ice plant in GDh. Gadhdhoo was forced to halt operations after running out of fuel.
