Maldivian woman sentenced to seven years for prostitution; man who operated brothel jailed for 5 years!

While the female defendant received a seven-year sentence and the male defendant was sentenced to five years, the court ruled that separate charges of blackmail and the production of pornography were not proven against them.

The Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court has sentenced a local woman to seven years in prison after finding her guilty of prostitution. Additionally, a man was handed a prison sentence by the same court after being convicted of operating a brothel.
This case involves charges filed by the state under the Sexual Offences Act.
The state has filed a total of four charges against three individuals in this case. The defendants include one man and two women, all of whom are natives of Fuvahmulah.
The charges filed against them include prostitution, blackmail, and operating a brothel. Additionally, they face charges for the production of pornography involving the non-consensual filming of an individual's genitals.
During the trial stage, all three individuals denied all charges brought against them.
Following its review of the case, the court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the charges of blackmail and possession or distribution of obscene material against the three defendants.
However, the court has found the man involved in this case guilty of the charge of pimping. As a penalty for the offense, he has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Furthermore, the court has sentenced the woman to seven years in prison after finding her guilty of prostitution charges.
To uphold community moral standards and considering the nature of the case in relation to public decency, the Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court has withheld the full sentencing report from public release.
