Historic mosques must be designated as heritage sites and preserved: Former Islamic Minister Dr. Zahir
Zahir emphasized the importance of preserving Male's Bandaara Mosque as a heritage site following the government's decision to demolish it for a new structure. As public concern and opposition grow among citizens and historians, a petition has been submitted to the People's Majlis seeking to protect the mosque. In response to the widespread criticism, the current Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has stated that the government will consult with the public before proceeding further.

Former Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir has emphasized the importance of designating historic mosques as heritage sites to ensure their preservation and protection.
Highlighting that ancient mosques stand as a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of our ancestors, Zahir took to social media to emphasize the vital importance of preserving such heritage sites.
In a social media post regarding the demolition of the Bandaara Mosque, Dr. Zahir stated that ancient mosques vividly illustrate the deep respect and love our ancestors held for these sacred spaces. Noting that the Bandaara Mosque carries a long history and many cherished memories, Dr. Zahir emphasized that while the state must ensure and consider the convenience of worshippers, such structures should be preserved as heritage sites rather than being destroyed.

Drawing parallels from Islamic history, Zahir noted that services rendered to the Two Holy Mosques throughout various eras remain visible today because previous structures were preserved rather than removed. He specifically highlighted that the contributions of the Umayyads, Abbasids, the Ottoman Empire, and the Saudi monarchs to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi are still clearly identifiable through the mosque's pillars and intricate designs.
The controversy surrounding Bandaara Mosque has intensified following Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed’s announcement of plans to demolish the mosque to make way for a larger, modern structure. Historians, former cabinet ministers, and a significant number of citizens have taken to social media to voice their opposition to the decision. Many are expressing their concerns, arguing that Bandaara Mosque is a landmark of profound historical significance to Male' and must be preserved rather than destroyed.
Following widespread public criticism, Minister Shaheem later stated that he would seek public opinion and engage in further consultations regarding the matter. While government activists continue to defend the decision, an e-petition has already been submitted to the People’s Majlis calling for the protection of Bandaara Mosque as a historical site. Public concern over the issue remains significantly high.
There are no legal impediments under the Maldives Heritage Act to designating the Bandaara Mosque as a protected historical monument.
