Former Environment Minister Aminath Shauna:
Former Minister Aminath Shauna has been appointed to the United Nations (UN) Ocean Decade Advisory Board.
Shauna, who previously served as the Minister of Environment under the former administration of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), will join the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade) board.
Her term will run from 1 January 2026 - 31 December 2027.

The board's key responsibility is to provide strategic advice on implementing the objectives of the Ocean Decade.
This includes advising UNESCO on resource utilization and ensuring equitable representation from diverse regions and stakeholder groups.
Shauna has long been a strong advocate for environmental issues. During her time as Minister of Environment, she led numerous environmental initiatives.
In 2020, she was recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and in 2023, she received the prestigious "New Economy Catalyst" award from Bloomberg.
Shauna holds a degree in Political Science, Environmental Science, and Economics from Westminster College. She served as Minister of Environment from 2021 to 2023 under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
Prior to this role, she was Policy Secretary at the President’s Office, and Under Secretary during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government.
Shauna also worked as a journalist at Minivan News before her political career.
