The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has submitted a formal request for an investigation into financial negligence involving shareholders’ funds, following revelations in recent audit reports.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company acknowledged that multiple audits have flagged serious lapses in the handling of shareholder capital. MTCC, a publicly listed state-owned enterprise, has now called on relevant authorities to launch a full investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable, including the reimbursement of any mismanaged funds.

While the company has pledged full cooperation and transparency in the investigation, it has not yet disclosed the total amount involved or the identities of those potentially responsible for the financial misconduct.

This development comes on the heels of another high-profile case involving the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), which also submitted a case on the same day alleging embezzlement of over MVR 200 million between 2019 and 2023. The back-to-back revelations have sparked growing public concern over the financial governance of state-owned enterprises.

As one of the largest loss-incurring SOEs in the Maldives, MTCC’s move to initiate accountability marks a significant shift. However, the incidents underscore a deeper issue: the urgent need to overhaul financial oversight mechanisms across government companies.

The surfacing of multiple financial irregularities within a single day has intensified calls for stronger regulation, transparency, and accountability within the country’s public sector, particularly in institutions funded by taxpayers and shareholders alike.
