Customs seized smuggled Red Bull energy drinks and cigarettes at Hithadhoo Port

A similar recent case resulted in a private company being fined MVR 20 million for unpaid duties on smuggled cigarettes

A significant quantity of Red Bull energy drinks and cigarettes was seized by Maldives Customs Service while being cleared through Hithadhoo Port.

RaajjeMV understands that the items were discovered concealed inside a container during the clearance process on Wednesday morning, at approximately 10:30am. While the operation successfully intercepted the contraband, the exact quantity of Red Bull and cigarettes confiscated has not been disclosed.

Neither Maldives Customs Service nor the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has released further details regarding the seizure or any potential suspects involved.

This incident follows a pattern of similar smuggling attempts uncovered at local ports. In a notable case earlier this year, the Civil Court ordered a private company to pay over MVR 20 million in unpaid duties after cigarettes were removed from Customs without proper clearance. That case involved shipments imported on 27 April and 4 June 2018 and was brought forward by Maldives Customs Service.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the latest seizure is linked to any ongoing investigations or prior cases.
