Special presidential commission on Yumnu's case, giving a press conference on 30.04.2025

The Presidential Commission has stated that the investigation report on the case of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who was found fallen on the roof of a warehouse from H. Fentenoy in the early hours of April 18, will be wrapped up and submitted within approximately two weeks.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ on Sunday, the Presidential Commission, which was established to conduct a fair investigation into the case, revealed that their work is nearing completion and that the commission's investigation report will be finalized and submitted to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu within about approximately weeks.

The commission has also visited places related to Yumnu to gather information for the investigation. They have also met with and questioned relevant employees from related agencies.

Due to dissatisfaction with how the investigation was being conducted, several young adults took to the streets to protest and call for justice, prompting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to establish a Presidential Commission on 27 April 2025. However, Yumnu's family and the general public continue to express a lack of confidence in the commission.

The chairman of the Presidential Commission is former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munawwar.

In addition to the Presidential Commission, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has also revealed that they are investigating the case with “special priority”. However, there are discrepancies between the information released by the police institution and the information provided by the family. On 22 May 2025, the family stated that even a month after Yumnu's fall, there had been no progress in the investigation. However, the police claimed that they were not receiving cooperation from the family. The police also stated that they were working to obtain necessary information through Malaysian police. However, the family denied these allegations by the police, saying that the police did not want to meet Yumnu officially and only requested to meet privately. The family also stated that although the police claimed they had not shared any information about Yumnu's health, the police had not requested such information.

Despite heavy criticism directed at the police regarding the case, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan stated that no wrongdoing was identified in how the police handled the case of Yumnu's fall. However, many people allege that the police have lied and greatly obstructed the investigation in the case.

In the case where Yumnu was found fallen, the police initially stated that there was no reason to believe anyone else was involved in her fall. However, on 8 May 2025, the family, quoting the victim, said that Yumnu did not jump on her own. Yumnu also stated that on the night of the incident, in addition to Raud Ahmed Zilal, four other people were present in the house. Yumnu also said that after she fell, she was left there by the people she went with.

Further, Yumnu stated that she went to the house on the invitation from Yoosuf Yassaar Abdul Ghafoor. Yassaar is one of the suspects the police say was among those who partied under the influence at Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen's house.
