Officers of the Maldives Immigration have begun using body cameras.
Special operations are underway in the Greater Malé Region to identify and inspect locations where undocumented foreigners reside and food establishments operated by foreign nationals, as part of efforts to address the issue of illegal immigration.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, the Maldives Immigration department revealed that as part of ongoing efforts to inspect illegal foreigners, authorities conducted an operation yesterday in Hulhumalé Phase I. During the inspection, three individuals found residing illegally were taken into Immigration custody. The post also noted that body cameras were used during the operation.
Immigration officials stated that their goal is to swiftly address the issue of illegal foreigners in the country, mitigate risks to public health, ensure the safety and security of citizens, and enforce the Immigration Law against those residing illegally and individuals involved in related activities.
The operation to identify illegal foreigners has now been extended to several islands in the atolls. Numerous individuals found residing unlawfully have been arrested, with many already deported to their home countries.
