Authorities have publicized the identities of eight individuals suspected of partying under the influence on the night Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, 21, fell from H. Fentenoy building onto the roof of a neighboring house. CCTV footage capturing the incident has also been made public.
During a press conference held by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Thursday after coming under fire and public scrutiny, CCTV footage showing Yumnu and Raud Ahmed Zilal engaging in indecent acts in the stairwell of Fentenoy was aired on Light TV.
Regarding the incident, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau highlighted that the passports of all those involved in the case have been confiscated. He also stated that locations related to the suspects are being searched.
Addressing why those who were with Yumnu that night were not arrested, CP Shujau explained that if they were arrested and the investigation was not completed within 30 days, the case could be dismissed. He said they chose not to arrest them to avoid the risk of not being able to complete the investigation and send it to the Prosecutor General's Office within the 30-day deadline.
CP Shujau said that the police need more time to fully investigate the case and that they will seek international assistance.
Following the disclosure of extensive information about the incident by an account on social media platform X known as ‘Hassan Kurusee’, the police held an impromptu press conference on the night of Tuesday, April 22 where they revealed that seven other people were with Yumnu that night, totaling three women and five men.
Many people have been criticizing the police's statement that Yumnu jumped on her own. At the initial press conference, while the police revealed the name and address of the female involved in the incident, they did not disclose any details about the other individuals involved.
