A decision has been made to submit a proposal to the National Congress to hold an extraordinary congress of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has decided to submit a proposal to its National Congress to begin preparations for holding an extraordinary congress, and a meeting of the party's National Congress has been scheduled for Saturday night.

MDP said that the National Congress meeting will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 8:30pm. The meeting is set to take place at the party’s main campaign site.

The agenda for the National Congress meeting on Saturday includes deciding to hold an extraordinary congress as soon as possible and setting a date for it. It also includes appointing a committee to handle the administrative aspects of the task.

MDP's decision to set a date for an extraordinary congress and begin preparations comes at a time when the former president of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed, has also spoken about an alliance between the opposition parties, MDP and The Democrats.

According to MDP's constitution, a congress is held every five years. However, the constitution allows for an extraordinary congress to be held if needed. The last MDP congress was held in 2022.
