A specialist was flown in from India to advice on the treatment plan

The woman who was critically injured in a fire in Rasdhoo island of Alif Alif atoll, has succumbed to her injuries.

The 31-year-old woman died while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

When she was transferred to the capital Malé City for extensive treatment following the incident that occurred on the night of March 24 in Rasdhoo, a majority of her body was already burned. Even then, doctors had given up hope, according to information provided by the family.

The man who was also severely burned in the incident is currently receiving treatment in intensive care. The couple also has a five-year-old child.

Dr. Shailesh V. Ranade, a Burns and Plastic Surgeon from Bhatia Hospital in Mumbai, India, was flown in on March 27 to provide advice on the treatment of the couple.

IGMH stated that they were being treated with the advice and consultation of the specialist.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) received the report of the fire incident at 11:15pm on March 24.

Although they were brought to the capital Malé City for emergency treatment that night, some media outlets have reported, citing the family, that they were not given privacy in the ICU, claiming there was “no space”. The family also stressed, quoting doctors, that with 83 percent of the woman's body and 78 percent of the man's body burned, survival was unlikely.

According to information received, the couple has a five-year-old child. However, the child was not in the room at the time of the fire incident. The cause of the fire incident remains unclear.

However, further investigations are currently underway in connection with the case.
