The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has stated that MVR 4,500 has been deposited as Zakat al-Fitr for individuals registered as poor, for the year 1446.
Earlier, the ministry revealed that this change was made to establish social justice, which is one of the objectives of Zakat.
Previously, the practice was to distribute only what was collected from each island to the respective island's residents. According to the ministry, the difference now is that the entire country is considered as one unit, and distribution is done equally across the board.
The ministry has revealed that this is the first time such a change has been implemented in the history of Zakat al-Fitr distribution in the Maldives, and that so far this year, MVR 12.4 million has been collected for Zakat al-Fitr.
Further, the ministry highlighted that they have decided to donate MVR 500,000 for food for children in Gaza, Palestine. In addition to this, the ministry has revealed that each poor person in the cape Malé City region will receive 15 kilograms of rice.
In accordance with the announcement made by the Zakat House, the distribution of items accepted as Zakat al-Fitr to the poor and needy for the year 2025 began on Friday.
According to Zakat House statistics, 2025 is the year with the highest Zakat collection in the past five years.
