Former MP for Addu Meedhoo constituency and President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Women’s Wing Rozaina Adam has said that while corruption in the incumbent administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reached its peak, the citizens of the Maldives are struggling to acquire essential medicines through the national health insurance scheme Aasandha. Meanwhile, the government is focused on acquiring missiles.

On Monday afternoon, Khadheeja Mohamed, a member of MDP's Women's Wing, was summoned to the Galolhu Police Investigation Building. Speaking to RaajjeMV in the area, Rozaina said that the right to freedom of assembly, the right to protest, and the right to demonstrate are guaranteed by the Constitution of the Maldives, and that these rights are written in the Constitution knowing that their implementation will cause inconvenience to the public.

Rozaina said that protesting on the streets in accordance with the rights granted by the Constitution may sometimes inconvenience the public, but these rights are given to defend more important rights than the inconvenience caused to the public.

Rozaina said that as the incumbent administration goes to extremes, we are seeing corruption reaching its peak. She said that while the citizens of this country are struggling to buy medicine through Aasandha, the incumbent administration is trying to buy missiles.

Rozaina said that Maldivian citizens are forced to take to the streets today because the incumbent administration has stripped them of many of their rights, and as a result, many people are without housing today because of the current administration.

Rozaina further said that since the Muizzu administration came to power, even the Aasandha that was being provided to citizens has been completely eliminated, and many medicines that were previously available through Aasandha are now unavailable and discontinued.

Rozaina said that the summoning of protesters to the police in connection with the peaceful protests carried out by MDP is not because they have violated the law, but because the Muizzu administration is inconvenienced by MDP's protests. She added that it is not acceptable to put citizens in jail and handcuff them every time the government is inconvenienced.
