Although a newly acquired 1,000 kW engine has been brought to southernmost Addu City to increase the generation capacity of the Central Power Station, the electricity issue remains unsolved, and the power service was interrupted again on Friday.

Fenaka Corporation stated that due to an issue at the powerhouse, electricity was cut off for two hours starting from Friday afternoon.

Fenaka said that they have since begun the work of installing the engine at the Central Power Station. However, due to high load, the power went out in several regions since 5pm Friday.

As a permanent solution to the electricity problem has not been found for an extended period of time, the public has been dragging the government on social media platforms.

On March 11, an emergency motion submitted by Ibrahim Nazil, MP for South Hithadhoo constituency, regarding the frequent power outages in the connected islands of Addu City that are causing difficulties in the basic lives of the city's residents, was rejected by the People’s Majlis.

Considering the power outage issue in Addu City as not a significant matter, lawmakers of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) representing Addu City voted to reject the emergency motion.

With the electricity problem in Addu remaining unresolved even during the ongoing fasting month of Ramadan, the city's residents continue to face hardships. As a result of unannounced power cuts, household electrical appliances have been damaged, and residents have even taken to the streets to protest during this Ramadan.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier promised to resolve Addu's electricity problem before the start of the fasting month. However, the emergency motion stated that due to the government's negligence in providing electricity to Addu City, the city residents are facing significant difficulties this Ramadan, in their everyday routines.
