Ibrahim “Gabbarey” Abdulla, the President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s South Mahchangoalhi constituency, who was arrested during MDP's protest to hold the government accountable, has been released with conditions.
He was arrested on Sunday during the main opposition party’s protest while raising his voice against the government, without disclosing a reason. Participants of the gathering have noted that officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) targeted him specifically for arrest.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, MPS revealed that after he was brought to court on Monday morning to decide on his detention, Gabbarey was released with conditions. However, the police have not revealed the details of said conditional bail.
MDP's Vice Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed told RaajjeMV that two conditions were imposed on him. These are cooperating with the investigation and not committing any further offenses. Ibrahim also said that he has been accused of assaulting a police officer.
During the MDP protest, police abruptly entered the crowd, and when a protester fell, other participants tried to help him, but the police obstructed this effort and began pushing the public. Even when the public tried to move forward, the police used force to push the protesters back.
Ahmed Shazeen, the President of Central Mahchangoalhi constituency, was also arrested from the protest on Sunday night. However, he was released later that night.
