The Ministry of Finance and Planning has held a staff night with a grand Indian-themed celebration at a time the island nation’s revenue has declined by 19 percent.
According to videos obtained by RaajjeMV and those circulating on social media, the Finance Ministry's annual staff night appears to have been held with substantial expenditure.
The videos show a red carpet walkway specially made for participants, with Bollywood celebrity photos displayed along its sides.
Public criticism has been directed at government institutions holding expensive celebrations while the country's financial situation remains precarious. This criticism is particularly pointed given that schools have been instructed to only hold essential events, yet institutions and agencies continue to organize such grand celebrations.
According to what is seen on the videos, significant expenses appear to have been incurred for stage decoration, table arrangements, and event catering. RaajjeMV has also learned that a local event company was contracted for event organization and sound management.
The Bollywood theme of the event has drawn massive public criticism, particularly because the incumbent administration came to power through a major "India Out" campaign. Some awards presented during the event were even named in Hindi, including "Ekdam Jakaas Award" and "Chapad Chapad Award."
The celebration featured various performances with Hindi songs and music. Finance Minister Moosa Zameer and other participants wore Indian attire, with the Minister wearing a kurta.
Most female participants wore Indian cultural clothing such as saris, salwar kameez, lehenga, and Punjabi suits. Male participants also dressed in attire reflecting Indian cultural elements.
RaajjeMV attempted to determine the cost of this celebration by contacting multiple officials at the ministry. However, the ministry has refused to share the details. However, the ministry has informed RaajjeMV that no state budget funds were used for this event.
Financial records show that state revenue decreased by MVR 874 million in the first month of this year.
Looking at the figures, there has been a decline in tax revenue, non-tax revenue, import duty revenue, personal income tax, and business profit tax. Similarly, revenue from GST, departure tax, airport development fees, other fees, and rental income have also decreased.
In the first month of this year, the government received MVR 3.7 billion in revenue, whereas during the same period last year, revenue amounted to MVR 4.6 billion.
The significant decrease in revenue is attributed to a substantial decline in tax collections. It is noted that tax revenue has decreased by MVR 589 million.
So far this year, tax revenue stands at MVR 3.35 billion, compared to MVR 3.94 billion collected during the same period last year. Revenue from import duties and business and property taxes has also decreased.
