RaajjeTV ordered to respond to issue of "Fudhijje, Fundijje" song

The Maldives Broadcasting Commission has given privately-run television station RaajjeTV a 15-day period to respond to the issue of the song composed by the station for the special coverage of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s "Fudhijje, Fundijje" rally.

In a letter addressed to RaajjeTV's Deputy CEO Naazmee Saeed on February 9, Broadcom stated that after reviewing the song aired by RaajjeTV on 26 January 2025, it was found to be in violation of the Broadcasting Code of Practice.

The letter stated that some of the content of the song violates parts 1 and 4 of the Broadcasting Code of Practice principles. Broadcom revealed that the content does not meet the standards of "delivering news and current affairs without bias, and delivering true information with equality in news reporting."

In addition to this, Broadcom has decided that the content also violates the principle of "when disclosing information about an unproven event, it should be based on a source deemed reliable." The letter highlighted what Broadcom considers to be content that does not meet the standards.

Broadcom has announced that it is giving RaajjeTV the opportunity to respond to the complaint under the "Complaint Submission and Complaint Acceptance System." Therefore, RaajjeTV has been given until 2pm on February 24 to respond to this issue. The commission has also instructed that if they are unable to respond within this period, they should state the reason and request for an extension.

Moreover, Broadcom has informed RaajjeTV that if they do not respond in writing within the given period or do not request an extension by stating a reason, the case will be reviewed and concluded based on the documents available for the investigation.

The commission stated that they began investigating the matter on 30 January 2025.

Broadcom had also sent a letter to RaajjeTV on January 26, appealing them to be mindful of broadcasting standards and guidelines.
