The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has protested near the People's Majlis building, calling for the immediate resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The inaugural sitting of the People’s Majlis for the year was held on Thursday, February 6.
The sitting began at 9:00am on Thursday.
The main item included in Thursday's agenda was the delivery of the Presidential Address by the President of the Republic.
MDP has been saying that the government has abruptly made changes to the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, stripping lawmakers of their powers, with the president grasping control of the Majlis.
Before the inaugural sitting, MDP urged as many citizens as possible to gather near the parliament building. MDP made this call during an informal meeting of the party's National Congress held at their main office on Wednesday.
During the MDP meeting, they highlighted the unjust actions being carried out by the current government.
Further, the main opposition has urged for the annulment of the changes introduced by the government's proposal that diminishes the powers of the lawmakers, and for the Constitution to be restored to its previous state.
MDP has been holding serial gatherings and protests against the undermining of the Constitution's authority.
The main opposition party has stressed that they will continue to protest and raise their voices.
The party's National Congress has pledged to continue a series of activities throughout the country until the unfavorable changes made to the Constitution are rectified.
MDP says they gathered near the Majlis building on its opening day to ensure the independence of the People's Majlis, to free the People's Majlis, and to regain the power of the people.
