The license of a 60-year-old Maldivian woman has been suspended and her motorcycle towed in connection with an accident that resulted in the death of an expatriate.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Saturday revealed that a report was filed about an accident that occurred at 8:19am on 1 February 2025, where a motorcycle collided with a cone placed to indicate ongoing work near solar panels on the lane coming from Hulhumalé to Malé.
The police institution revealed that the person involved in the accident was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment, and the hospital informed that the individual passed away at around 9:05am on Saturday while receiving treatment.
MPS confirmed that the deceased was a Bangladeshi man.
However, the police did not disclose any further information.
Later on, CCTV footage was released on social media showing a motorcycle driving over the head of the fallen accident victim.
The video shows a motorcycle speeding over the victim's head as he lay on the ground.
The police institution revealed that the motorcycle was driven by a 60-year-old Maldivian woman only after increased pressure from journalists following the release of the CCTV footage on social media.
According to available information, the woman remained at the accident scene that day. Later, the police had sent her away from the scene without taking any immediate action.
In a message shared by MPS on Tuesday, they stated that a 60-year-old Maldivian woman had been questioned in connection with the accident that resulted in the expatriate’s death. They also mentioned that her license had been suspended and the motorcycle she was riding had been towed.
Further investigations are currently underway in connection with the case.
