Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) has addressed a letter to privately-run television station RaajjeTV, urging attention to broadcasting standards and guidelines.

The letter, received by the TV station on Sunday, was signed by Broadcom's Secretary General Mariyam Zeeniya.

The letter does not specify whether RaajjeTV has violated any “rules” or not.

The letter stated that it urges all broadcasters to ensure that their news and information delivery adheres to the Broadcasting Code of Practice, journalistic principles, and general social standards.

The letter also urges broadcasters to pay extra attention to broadcasting audio and video in accordance with the standards and guidelines set forth in the Code of Practice under Article 37 of the Broadcasting Act.

The letter further states that the commission reminds broadcasters to be mindful of including all parties' perspectives when delivering news and information, in addition to conducting fair and responsible journalism.

Broadcom has sent the letter at a time new members were recently appointed to the commission. Critics have previously alleged that with the appointment of new members, there would be pressure to shape media outlets in a way desired by the incumbent administration.

The letter has been addressed to RaajjeTV at a time the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, MP for Dhiggaru Constituency, has revealed that the government is preparing to submit a new bill to the People’s Majlis to control the media.
