The former Vice President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Shifaz has raised questions about how the Maldives Police Service (MPS) will act regarding the theft committed by the head of the investigative agency, in connection with the scandal involving the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) fraudulently increasing the party’s membership count.
Speaking at a gathering held by the main opposition party on Thursday night at the Peetral Park curb, Shifaz said that what the people have observed is the theft of their identity. According to Shifaz, while the entire Department of National Registration (DNR) data has been taken and people's memberships have been scraped, the most dangerous thing is that there is nothing that can be done about it.
Shifaz said that one of the most important purposes for which this constitution was obtained, has been nullified again; system of governance where one power can oversee another. Shifaz stressed that there is nothing the People's Majlis can do and that what is being done is that the highest authority of the police committed theft. The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, who is in the most significant role of enforcing the safety, security and protection of the people and the law, the one who is leading with the police chief, the head of the entire investigative agency, is committing a major theft.
Shifaz said that the question remains; who will investigate that theft?
Further noting that the police institution receives benefits, protection, and security that no other Maldivian individual receives, Shifaz stressed that it is because they are there to defend the people.
He said that their salaries are paid from the people's money and that they are the ones who give insurance, housing, even uniforms, and medical care for their spouses and children.
Shifaz noted that the police institution receives benefits, protection, and security that no other Maldivian individual receives and that it is something they do out of love, thankfully because officers are there to rise up for the people’s defence and security.
The force vice president of MDP asked the police what they will do when their highest-ranking official commits such a major theft and if they will rise up against the people if they decide to come out to raise their voices about it.
Shifaz said that the constitution is most needed to establish trust in the police and to gain public trust in the Maldives Police Service. However, he noted that every time it comes closer to happening, the foundation is destroyed.
According to Shifaz, this happens "because we get such incompetent ignorant leaders."
Several people have condemned the disgraceful act of the Minister of Homeland, Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, for playing a leading role in the major crime of stealing personal information of the Maldivian citizens.
As one of the largest opposition parties in the Maldives, MDP has called for an investigation into the matter and has also called for the home minister to be removed from his position to conduct a fair investigation.
MDP has also stated that the entire procedure of admitting people to the main ruling party using the employees, resources, and information of the Department of National Registration was carried out under the direct supervision of the home minister.
Three employees who recognize the place have confirmed to RaajjeMV that the place seen in the leaked photos on social media showing forms being filled out under the supervision of the home minister is in fact, the Department of National Registration (DNR).
