Hassan “Hassanko” Latheef has resigned from his position as the President of The Democrats.

Confirming his resignation from the position of party president to RaajjeMV, Hassan Latheef highlighted that he resigned from the position of party president because he felt it was the best course of action at this time.

Hassan Latheef has also previously served as the Chairperson of the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Before that, during the first MDP administration, Hassan Latheef also served as the Youth Minister during Former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration.

Hassan Latheef, who also served as the Member of Parliament for the West-Henveiru constituency in the 19th People's Majlis assembly, left MDP during the rift that split the party into two factions. After that, he founded The Democrats and was elected as the party's president after competing against Hussain Amru.

While Hassan Latheef has resigned from his position as the president of The Democrats, the party's vice president Mohamed “Shippe” Shifaz has also resigned.

In addition to this, Amru, who was the running mate of The Democrats' candidate Ilyas Labeeb in the 2023 presidential election, has also left the party and signed with the main opposition party.
