Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that as of last Sunday, nine individuals have been fined since vaping was banned in the Maldives.

Under an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, the import of vapes was banned on 15 November 2024, and their sale, free distribution, and use have been prohibited since 15 December 2024

The police institution has said that since the implementation of the vape regulation, nine people have been slapped with MVR 50,000-fines so far.

Among the nine individuals who violated the vape regulation, one person was detained and fined for using an electronic cigarette while riding a motorcycle. He was also fined MVR 10,000. MPS added that the fine was imposed in accordance with the first amendment to the Tobacco Control Act.

The fines for vaping, selling vapes, and engaging in any vape-related transactions include MVR 5,000 for using a vape, while each person selling vapes will be fined MVR 20,000.

Further, a fine of MVR 10,000 will be imposed for each vape sold, and even if a vape is given away for free, a fine of MVR 10,000 will be imposed, as per the vape law.

MPS earlier stated that when fining individuals who violate the law, information will be shared via a message sent to their mobile devices.

In a bid to reduce tobacco use, the government has also taken steps under the master plan it has established. As such, with the increase in import duty on cigarettes, the price of a pack of cigarettes has risen significantly. Along with this, some businesses report that cigarette sales have also decreased.

In addition to this, a hotline has been introduced to provide expert guidance and assistance at any time to help quit tobacco use. The number to call for this service is 1676.

The President's Office has stated that these policies are being implemented by the government with the aim of finding a permanent solution to the issue of tobacco use within the next four years.
