Authorities have seized drugs worth MVR 328 million within just 11 months.

This was revealed by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan.

Noting that the issue of drugs is being treated as a serious matter, the minister highlighted that a major operation has been launched against drug trafficking, possession and abuse in collaboration with all relevant government institutions.

This operation is being held as part of efforts to crackdown on such networks.

Shedding light on the operation, the minister said that drugs and alcohol worth MVR 328 million have been seized within just 11 months.

This includes 177 kilograms of drugs and over 8,300 bottles and cans of beer.

The minister stressed that this shows the extent of the issue in the Maldives, adding that authorities are targeting to find a permanent solution to this issue within the ongoing presidential term.

Ihusaan added that the biggest change they wish to bring while working towards a permanent solution to the drugs and gang-related issues, is the amendments needed to make to the two existing laws.

The minister noted that the two amendments have been drafted and sent to the Attorney General’s Office.

He expressed confidence that the AG Office will work to ensure these bills are ratified within this presidential term.
