Abdul Haseeb Ismail's appointment to EC sent for Majlis approval

Abdul Haseeb Ismail's name has been forwarded to the People's Majlis for approval, as the term of Elections Commission (EC) President Fuad Thaufeeq is coming to an end.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s letter to appoint Abdul Haseeb Ismail to the commission, was read out at the Majlis sitting on Monday.

The president has sought approval for Abdul Haseeb Ismail.

The names of other individuals who responded to the announcement for applications to the position of EC member were also sent.

Fuad's term will end on 24 November 2024.

The term for an EC member is five years and any individual can serve a maximum of two terms.

The speaker has forwarded the appointment to the Independent Institutions Committee of the People’s Majlis for review.

Abdul Haseeb Ismail was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Islamic Ministry during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

However, he was suspended and later dismissed from the position following allegations of harsh treatment towards some ministry employees as well as other issues.

Abdul Haseeb Ismail presently holds the position of Assistant Director at the Elections Commission.
