Maldives Customs Service has seized more than three kilograms of drugs being smuggled into the Maldives.

The drugs were confiscated during further inspection of the luggage on a passenger that arrived in the Maldives. Further, a package sent through post was also checked.

During the search conducted on a 33-year-old Brazilian woman that arrived from Brazil on October 5, officers searched her luggage and found substances suspected to be drugs.

Upon initial testing, customs found that the substances tested positive for cocaine.

The drugs weighed a total of 2.44 kilograms.

The drugs carry a street value of MVR 6,100,000.

Further, officers inspected a package that arrived via post on October 7.

Officers found suspected narcotics inside the package, which tested positive for heroin upon initial testing.

The drugs inside the post package weighed a total of 1.04 kilograms.

It carries an estimated street value of MVR 1,040,000.

The total weight of the drugs seized in connection with these cases amounts to 3.48 kilograms.

The seized drugs as well as the Brazilian passenger as well as a 40-year-old Maldivian man who came to customs to collect the postal package, have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Further investigations are currently underway in connection with both cases.
