The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has begun seeking undocumented migrant workers residing in the capital region, Malé City.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan took to social media platform ‘X’ on Saturday, to reveal that authorities launched an operation to take legal action against undocumented migrant workers engaged in illegal trade and business in the capital region.

As part of this operation, 50 undocumented migrant workers were handed over to the Maldives Immigration department on Saturday.

Shifan revealed that the operation was spearheaded by the immigration department itself.

Apart from being a country with a massive community of undocumented migrant workers, Maldives is also witnessing the surging of illegal small businesses that fall into the hands of migrant workers.

Due to the spiraling of the illegal recruitment of migrant workers using forged documents, Maldives recently halted the recruitment of unskilled laborers from Bangladesh.

Police officers raided the local market on Majeedhee Magu and the one on Ameenee Magu, where a large number of migrant workers are found to be working.
